How to chose cool KPIs for your site

Avinash has a great post on key performance idicators (KPIs) over at his web analytics blog. Not only does he mention some of the most useful ones (depending on your business that is), he also puts up 8 simple rules on how to do it right:

    #1: Start simple, start direct, and please start with Outcomes!

    #2: Leverage metrics that identify success for areas where you spend the largest efforts.

    #3: Wean your Marketers off the “one night stand” mentality, do pan session analysis.

    #4: If you can’t segment a Key Performance Indicator, you have picked the wrong one.

    #5: Even “brand” and “site usage” can be measured, Loyalty rocks!

    #6: If your short list of KPI’s don’t include a couple that report customer voice directly then you will Never be as successful as you should be.

    #7: Using KPI’s that can tie back to the “old world” and “traditional metrics” and help you bring people to the current age.

    #8: Not using Competitive Intelligence KPI’s can be considered a crime against humanity!

As mentioned above, the choice of which KPIs to use is highly depending on your website’s business. I will give you some more examples of what we measure over at Hitmeister (and not mentioned in Avinash’s article) in a future post. :)

A better tomorrow: Project 10^100

 Listen up, listen up! Google celebrate their 10th anniversary… and now not only want “not to be evil”, but also to make the world a better place. That’s why they are offering a total of 10 Mio. $ of funding for inspiring and exciting ideas that change the world and help as many people as possible:

With their socalled Project 10 to the 100th the big G now calls for ideas worthy to be realized. Is there a better way to spend a fraction of the illimited Google funds? I doubt it! So yes, this is a good thing - so spread the word!

Ah almost forgot, and it’s also a great (yet pricy) image campaig… but still hellovalot better than giving it all to Jerry Seinfeld, don’t you think?

Faces, Interaction, and Rich Media

When it comes to online advertising, people rely to different tactics to boost response rate. Research firm MarketingSherpa puts up some numbers to the most common approaches and comes up with some interesting facts:

Apparently emotion still is one of the main drivers. And beats annoying expandable formats 2:1… keep that in mind before booking your next layer ads. ;-)

But as usual, there’s always a downside to such “wisdom” as therein praised video ads for instance also come in at No.2 spot for most annoying banner formats with 31% annoyance rate. Understandable with all that ludicrilicious autoplay-audio used some times…

Don’t watch the video!

I know, I know… long time no see. But oldie but goldie! :) It’s a viral campaign for a horror movie and one of the first really great usages of whole site flash layers. And… I just don’t want it to be forgotten:

Aah… so Hiphop is about Boootey!

Fun statistics over at Fleshmap: Imagine you sit down and count how often bodyparts are mentioned in songs of different genres… well, they did exactly that. And - by surprise - Hiphop seems to be most explicit:

Banner of the Day

Nike Sportswear and Compass Interactive pulled up this nicely orchastrated campaign:

The fun part: Clicking on the right-hand banner will start the flash layer. Some cool guy/gal presents you the selected merchandise, walks over the screen, and then comes to rest in the left-hand banner where the call-to-action is located. Me likes!
